HOW TO SEND GRAPHIC FILES USING WINDOWS MICROSOFT PAINT

By

Sharon Bond

Hello Class,

The activity this week is to send me a picture that you painted using the MS Paint Program.  I also want you to send me the image size of your picture.  Instructions are below.

Kids love to create pictures and you can do so much and be soooooooooo creative with your classes using this simple program on your computers.

Let's Begin:  Please Note:  Windows 95 version of MS Paint does not allow you to save your files using the JPEG or GIF formats.

1.  Click the Start button and choose Programs, Choose Accessories from the Programs menu, and open MS Paint.  Maximize the Paint window to make as much room to work on as possible.  If there is a small white square/screen, you will see three blue dots on the right of the square .   Click on the blue dots with the left mouse button.  You need to see a double arrow for your cursor.  Hold your left mouse down and drag the screen to its maximum size.

2.  Paint a simple picture using various tools.  I copied a picture from Microsoft PowerPoint  and pasted it in Paint.  You can add all kinds of pictures to paint using copy and paste.  Great fun.   Try it!!!!

3. Save your picture.  Select File and choose Save AS.  Type in a file name.

IMPORTANT:  I want you to save this file using using three different formats to show you how the memory size differs between these formats.  Saving the file as a bitmap file is so much bigger.  You do not want to send pictures save as bitmap format.

4. VERY IMPORTANT:  Notice the dialog box below file name titled Save as Type:....click the down arrow and save your picture using the following formats.  There are some earlier versions of paint that will not have both JPEG and GIF format options.  If that is the case, save your picture first as Bitmap format and save again as JPEG or GIF.

NOTICE:  Save as Type dialog box.  You should see the following choices when you press the down arrow.

24-bit Bitmap (*.bmp *.dib)

JPEGFILE  Interchange Format (*.jpg. *.jpeg)

Graphics Interchange Format (*.gif)

The file I sent to you saved as a regular paint  24 bit Bitmap file was 718kb  Too large to send via e-mail.

Happy Days saved as a 24 bit Bitmap file………….719 kb
Happy Days saved as a JPG file……………………..   40.8 kb
Happy Days saved as a Gif file………………………    19.9 kb

I sent your attachment as a Gif format.  IMPORTANT:  Gif files are the smallest to send over the Internet.

It is imperative to know that sending files via the Internet MUST be sent as JPEG or GIF file format or they are too large and will cause many problems to servers and personal computers.

HOW TO CHECK ON THE SIZE OF A FILE.

Experiment:  Save your picture first justg as a Bitmap format which is a regular picture format.  Right-click ion the picture you saved and select Properties.  Write down the size of your bitmap picture file.

Note: Your MS Paint program will have Jpeg or Gif formats.  Mine has all three bitmap, jpeg and gif.  Please save your picture as a Jpeg or Gif format.

Save your picture as a Gif file and check to see how large your file is now.

When you send back your picture to me, also include the Bitmap Size, Gif Size or/and JPG size.

It is very important you understand this concept when sending pictures over the Internet.   Send your picture to the class.

Thanks for all your hard work.  I hope you enjoy it.  I have tried to make this lesson as easy as possible.

How to Find the Size of your Attached file:
1.  Save your three files to your hard drive using bitmap, jpeg, and gif formats.  Next, right-click on your picture, select properties and it will tell you how large it is.  Please write and tell me if you do not have these formats on your paint program.  You may only have jpeg, bitmap etc.
The main objective of this lesson is to teach you not to send a picture saved as a bitmap format because they are too large.

2.  This is a great way to view the size of your files if you have Windows 98.  Be sure you have selected (View........as web page in your folder) and all you have to do is left click on the file once (do not open) and on the left it will tell you the size and show you a thumb size picture of the file you created.  NEAT!!!!!!!

What does this teach us: The Gif picture file format is the best way to send picture files over the Internet. Gif or Jpeg is fine to use. Bitmap files are too large to send via E-mail.

My goal for this lesson is to teach you MSPaint and how to format and send Bitmap files changed and formatted to gif or jpeg files. Also, how to print a picture that has been changed to Landscape orientation.

Thanks everyone,   Have a super week
