MICROSOFT EXCEL ONLINE

COMS 491 -  2 Semester Credits

DESCRIPTION:

Microsoft Excel is an electronic spreadsheet program.  You might have heard the terms "spreadsheet" and "worksheet".  People generally use them interchangeably.  To remain consistent with Microsoft and other publishers, the term worksheet refers to the row-and-column matrix sheet on which you work and the term spreadsheet refers to this type of computer application.  In addition, the term workbook will refer to the book of pages that is the standard Excel document.  The workbook can contain worksheets, chart sheets, or macro modules.  Students will work with formulas and functions, create graphs, enhance the presentation of a spreadsheet, and link a spreadsheet to a word document.

OBJECTIVES:

Learn to execute the following features in Excel.

Excel is a spreadsheet program you can use to organize, analyze and attractively present data  such as a budget or sales report. Excel allows you to: 

  • Create and save workbook files
  • Enter and edit data in a worksheet 
  • Use math formulas to perform calculations 
  •  Use Excel's built-in functions to simplify calculations 
  •  Apply formatting to cells 
  •  Insert and delete rows, columns, and sheets
  • Insert and format graphics such as clip art and WordArt
  • Create Charts and Objects
  • Print a worksheet with page numbers and header/footer text

MANUAL

You do not need a manual for this class.  I will send your assignments weekly (every Monday)  and they are due by the next week.  If you are not able to send an assignment on time, do not worry.  Just write me and we will work things out. 

AUDIENCE:

The class is designed for users who are proficient using a mouse and are familiar with the fundamentals of using the Macintosh Computer or the fundamentals of PC Windows. Students must have the software MS Excel have connection to an Internet Service Provider and be familiar with using E-mail.

EVALUATION:

The evaluation will be based on student participation via Internet/email, student participation and successfully completing  skillbuilders assigned with each lesson.  The course utilizes a mastery learning approach.  Ongoing individualized assistance will be available through online messaging and/or voice phone conferencing.
